Bilbo ist sehr wunderlich für einen Hobbit. Er vererbt Frodo Beutlin den magischen Ring. In jungen Jahren zog er mit dem Zauberer Gandalf und einer Gruppe von Zwergen zum Erebor, dem Einsamen Berg. Dort half er den Zwergen, den Drachen Smaug zu besiegen, derihre Minen vereinnahmt hatte. Auf dieser Reise fand Bilbo einen Zauberring. Er stellte fest, dass dieser Ring ihn unsichtbar machte, wenn er ihn trug. So entkam er Gollum, einem seltsamen Wesen, dem der Ring vorher gehörte.
